The first gas powered engine was designed by Karl Benz, who also made the first gas powered car. His company is now known as Mercedes Benz. mid 1800's. Germany. The first mass produced car was a Buick. in late 1900's-early 1900's. The first mass produced car made on an assembly line, or a production line, was the Ford Model T in the early 1900's. Byron Fortmann: Olds Motor Vehicle Company (1901) According to a book entitled Michigan Yesterday & Today authored by Robert W. Domm, the modern assembly line and its basic concept is credited to Ransom Olds, who used it to build the first mass-produced automobile, the Oldsmobile Curved Dash. Olds patented the assembly line concept! , which he put to work in his Olds Motor Vehicle Company factory in 1901.
