Buying car off family member?

Ramona Pago: You have to check the laws for your state, and if they family member lives in a different state, you have to check with those laws as well. For example, last year I bought a car from my aunt in New York, but I had to drive it back to where I live in New Jersey. It was less than an hour drive, but I still had to check with both states' laws on newly purchased car transportation AND perhaps more importantly, what you need to get it registered in your state. I ended up having to get the car title signed over to me, then get an insurance policy for it and register the car with New Jersey and pick up some plates for it BEFORE I actually went and picked up the car in New York. There were a couple different ways to do it, but believe it or not, that was actually the most convenient. So, just check with the department of motor vehicles....Show more

Carolin Southers: we are in the same state, CA.

Michelle Sohre: Check with hiway patrol but in my state, your! good for 10 days with a newly bought car if you keep the bill of sale in the car to show you just bought it.
