Car safety question for parents?

Emilie Santmyer: This is a tough one to answer, It all depends on the child. My youngest son who is 11 years old can exit the car on his own with no problem and very cautious of his surroundings, on the other hand, a friend of mines little girl who is 12 years old can not. she never pays attention to her surroundings. only you as a parent can determine if your child is ready and responsible.

Ulrike Hert: I didn't even know there was such a thing as child safety locks n car doors. I never used any. My kids are 14, 14, 12 and 9 and have always just known to wait to exit the car until I say and have always exited the car with caution concerning cars around us. We've mostly had vans with Sliding doors and so I've never had to worry about them opening a car door and hitting another car. I've always taught my kids how to be safe and the dangers of a parking lot etc... I've never had a problem with them not obeying my rules when it comes to safety....Show more

Shemek! a Laker: Seven?I'm not positive on my answer considering my son is three and nowhere near ready for that.

Booker Warlick: I'll get tons of thumb's down for this but whatever.I don't keep the child locks on in my car. My 4 year old knows how to take his seat belt off and how to open the doors. I know he never would unless it was an emergency situation so I don't see the point in locking them. He's responsible enough, even though he's young. I'd hate for the unimaginable to happen and him need to get out of the car ASAP before it sinks or blows, me being unconscious, and him stuck. No thanks....Show more

Mitzie Clough: We did it when my daughter turned 6. She's very good about not playing with the door to begin with and will only get out when we are standing on that side of the car. She knows that if she gets out she needs to stand right next to the car and not run off.Every parent is different. Some may have done it at a younger age, while others may think I! 'm totally crazy cause they didn't do it until the child was o! lder. The best answer really is: You know your child best. If you don't think they understand that they can not just take off once the car is (mostly) stopped or they play with the handle all the time and you're afraid that they'll open the door while the car is moving, then wait. However, I think once the child starts reaching double digits in age that they are ready to start opening the door on their own....Show more
