Nell Dipiero: lots of deforestation. People cut down trees to plant. in south america, they would often (and still do) use slash-and-burn techniques, where basically they just set a forest fire and then plow and use the ashes as fertilizer. the co2 released from the trees burning and the fact that there were now less trees to clean the air combined made for less-than-positive effects on the environment. However, may i ask, is it really necessary for you to talk about the environmental effects in a history essay about the late 15th century? the environment didn't have much of an impact on history until the late 19th and early 20th century, when we really started to screw things up....Show more
